Finally, it is getting cooler, Autumn is a great time for hiking! Every year from end of October to November, it is the season to see a hill full of silvergrass! Besides the popular spot in Sunset Peak in Lautau Island, you can see silvergrass in lots of mountain in Hong Kong! This time we visited Tung Yeung Shan near Kowloon Peak. Tung Yeung Shan belongs to Ma On Shan Country Park, we started the hiking trail from Tseng Lan Shue.
Today route:Tseng Lan Shue > to Tung Yeung Shan via Tai Lam Wu> Fei Ngo Shan Road

Google map is pretty good nowadays with the hiking trail. We just followed the green trail on google map and find the entrance for Wilson Trail sec. 4 in Tseng Lan Shue.

It was a comfortable walk from Tseng Lan Shue to Tai Lam Wu, as most part of the trail is covered by plants along the way.
First stop
There was a small stone stream, very quiet, the river is clear, a great photo spot.

After that, we passed a deserted old mansion, then we had to go down the trail, and when we reached Tai Lam Wu, soon we had to start hiking up the mountain! The steps towards the top of the mountain were a bit steep, it would be a bit difficult for the beginner. It takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the top of Tung Yeung Shan via Wilson Trail Sec. 4.
Second stop
Along the trail up to Tung Yeung Shan, don’t forget to look back! You can see Sai Kung pretty well… well, if the weather is good. We had a cloudy day with low visibility, I assume the view would be pretty nice with a blue sky!

Third Stop
On the top of Tung Yeung Shan, it was full of silvergrass! I think most people on the mountain stayed here. After around 3 hours of hiking, we are at the top of Tung Yeung Shan at 533m. Unfortunately we didn’t have a sunny day with a great sunset, we were still able to take some nice photos.

We hiked on a weekday, so there weren’t a lot of people along the hiking trail. It was easy to take photos with others within the frame.

After a 10-min hike from the top, you will reach Fei Ngo Shan Road, it is a cement-paved car road. If the weather is nice, I would recommend you to go to the Kowloon Peak Viewing Point, which is only 5 mins walk from Fei Ngo Shan Road.
If you don’t get an uber or taxi from there, you can walk down to Clear Water Bay Road to reach Choi Hung or walk via Wilson Trail sec. 4 to Tsz Wan Shan to finish the hike.
I heard West Buffalo Hill which is close to Tung Yeung Shan is also a great spot for silvergrass, so next time we can start a few hours earlier to reach both West Buffalo Hill and Tung Yeung Shan in one hike!

10 mins to reach top of Tung Yeung Shan
If you don’t want to hike 3-4 hours to reach the top of Tung Yeung Shan, there is an ultimate easiest( or laziest :P) way! You can drive or take a taxi up to Tate’s Pass in Fei Ngo Shan Road, can then hike 10-mins via Wilson Trail Sec. 4 to reach Tung Yeung Shan. It is pretty simple, right? 🙂
